PHMSA awarded the University of California, Berkeley with US$250 000 from its Competitive Academic Agreement Program. FOSA member Dr. Soga is the Donald H. McLaughlin Chair in Mineral Engineering and a Chancellor’s Professor at UC Berkeley.
FOSA had previously called for government and the pipeline industry to work together to establish a pipeline safety test facility. Based on operator input, FOSA issued a concept paper suggesting a buried ‘flow-loop’ pipeline to emulate leak
“PHMSA deserves praise for taking significant steps toward enhancing the safety of pipelines, including extending leak detection requirements," said FOSA Chairman JJ Williams.
OptaSense presented a one-of-a-kind demonstration of its fiber-optic-based pipeline leak detection system on a 2.5 Km buried flow loop that has been instrumented with the OptaSense fiber-optic-based system.
