Fiber Optic Sensing Association Commends API's New Leak Detection Standard

WASHINGTON DC – April 28, 2022 – The Fiber Optic Sensing Association (FOSA) congratulated the American Petroleum’s (API) release of the 2022 revisions of API RP 1175 – "Pipeline Leak Detection-Program Management” and API RP 1130 “Computational Pipeline Monitoring for Liquids."

"Fiber Optic Sensing based pipeline leak detection and location software is possibly the most important technological development in pipeline leak detection in recent years. The inclusion of Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing in the latest revisions of the API RPs is a testimony to the technology’s contribution to leak detection," said FOSA Executive Director Mark Uncapher.

Commenting on the just-released revisions to 1130 and 1175, FOSA Chairman Dave Cunningham said, "FOSA is gratified sensing technology has become more fully recognized as an important tool against pipeline leaks. Developed under API's American National Standards Institute (ANSI) accredited process, API standards are appropriately recognized not only for their technical rigor but also their third-party accreditation which facilitates acceptance by state, federal, and increasingly international regulators."

THE FIBER OPTIC SENSING ASSOCIATION (FOSA)
FOSA is a non-profit organization created in Washington DC in 2017 to educate industry, government, and the public on the benefits of fiber optic sensing. Through webinars, videos, white papers, public presentations, and public policy advocacy, the organization provides information on fiber optic sensing to secure critical facilities, enhance public safety and protect the environment. FOSA Premier Member Companies include AP Sensing, Corning, Ditch Witch, Dura-Line, FEBUS Optics, Fotech Solutions, Graz University of Technology, Hifi, LIOS Technology, NBG Fiber Optic Corp, NEC, Network Integrity Systems, OFS, Omnisens, OptaSense, OZ Optics, Prysmian Group, Sensonic, Senstar, Smartpipe Technologies, the University of California - Berkeley, and VIAVI Solutions.

American Petroleum Institute (API)
Representing all segments of America's oil and natural gas industry, API's nearly 600 members produce, process, and distribute most of the nation's energy. The industry supports millions of U.S. jobs. API was formed in 1919 as a standards-setting organization. In its first 100 years, API has developed more than 700 standards to enhance operational and environmental safety, efficiency, and sustainability.
