PRESS RELEASE Fiber Optic Sensing Association Releases Cable Installation Considerations for Fire Detection WASHINGTON DC, November 1, 2019 - The Fiber Optic Sensing Association (FOSA), the world’s premier trade association for distributed fiber optic sensing (DFOS), released a brief primer entitled Cable Installation Considerations for Fire Detection. The document contains guidance on specific requirements of fire detection in tunnels, large buildings, industrial sites and large equipment. Fiber optic sensing has emerged as a key technology for the safe and efficient operation of infrastructure facilities. This new document is the product of FOSA’s Technology Committee. "Distributed fiber optic sensing offers the clear benefit in the ability to cover a wide area from a central monitoring point. There are numerous additional benefits: the passive fiber optic cable is lightweight, small and easy to install. In addition, the insensitivity to electromagnetic interference, moisture and dust is a clear advantage in comparison to electrical heat and smoke detectors," said Gareth Lees, FOSA Technology Committee Chairman. "By streamlining and standardizing the distributed fiber optic sensing installation process, the already compelling economics of fiber optic sensing for fire safety and security is further enhanced. Cable Installation Considerations for Fire Detection provides guidance on best practice for the selection and installation of cables for distributed temperature sensing (DTS)," added JJ Williams, FOSA Chairman. "Cable Installation Considerations for Fire Detection distills considerable technical information into a concise 9 -page primer providing guidance to end users, installation contractors and others. We anticipate its being a valuable resource for users," said Mark Uncapher, FOSA Executive Director. The full text of FOSA’s Cable Installation Considerations for Fire Detection is available here. |
ABOUT THE FIBER OPTIC SENSING ASSOCIATION FOSA is a non-profit organization created in Washington DC in 2017 with the mission of educating industry, government and the public on the benefits of fiber optic sensing. Through webinars, videos, white papers, public presentations and public policy advocacy, the organization provides information on the use of fiber optic sensing to secure critical facilities, enhance public safety and protect the environment. FOSA Members include AP Sensing, Aselsan, Asymmetric Technologies, Corning, Ditch Witch, Dura-Line, FiOPS, Fotech Solutions, Frauscher Sensor Technology USA, Graz University of Technology, Hifi Engineering, NEC, Network Integrity Systems, NKT Photonics, OFS, Omnisens, OptaSense, OZ Optics, Prysmian Group, Schlumberger, Skyview Construction, Smartpipe Technologies and the University of California - Berkeley.
