Fiber Optic Sensing Association Commends Proposed LIFT Act Legislation for including Smart Infrastructure Technology Provisions

WASHINGTON DC, May 22, 2019 - The Fiber Optic Sensing Association (FOSA), the nation's premier trade association dedicated to fiber optic sensing technology, commended the recent introduction of an infrastructure package by 31 House Energy and Commerce Committee members, the Leading Infrastructure For Tomorrow’s America Act, or LIFT America Act (H.R. 2741).

FOSA Executive Director Mark Uncapher said the organization was dedicated to partnering with the Congress in this effort. “We look forward to working with the Committee as it considers the LIFT Act and other critical pieces of legislation. Leveraging ‘Smart Infrastructure’ technology will spur continued economic growth and job creation, incentivize domestic investment, while providing significant benefits to the American public,” said Uncapher.

Among the proposed legislation’s “Smart Infrastructure” technology provisions are:

  • $40 billion for the deployment of secure and resilient high-speed broadband internet service to expand access for communities nationwide
  • $5 billion in federal funding for low-interest financing of broadband infrastructure deployment through a new program
  • $4 billion to upgrade the U.S. electric grid to accommodate more renewable energy and make it more resilient
  • $2.7 billion to spur the development of Smart Communities, including $850 million in technical assistance to help cities and counties integrate clean energy into their redevelopment efforts

According to Uncapher, “One critical smart infrastructure technology is fiber optic sensing, used around the world to monitor critical infrastructure assets. With this transformational technology, a fiber optic cable located next to an asset acts as a sensor, providing real-time safety and efficiency alerts. The same sensing cable can be used for broadband data transmission, which makes this technology ideal for new infrastructure projects, in terms of asset protection and connectivity.”

ABOUT THE FIBER OPTIC SENSING ASSOCIATION FOSA is a non-profit organization created in Washington DC in 2017 with the mission of educating industry, government and the public on the benefits of fiber optic sensing. Through webinars, videos, white papers, public presentations and public policy advocacy, the organization provides information on the use of fiber optic sensing to secure critical facilities, enhance public safety and protect the environment.

FOSA Members include AP Sensing, Aselsan, Asymmetric Technologies, Corning, Ditch Witch, Dura-Line, FiOPS, Fotech Solutions, Frauscher Sensor Technology USA, Hifi Engineering, Network Integrity Systems, NKT Photonics, OFS, Omnisens, OptaSense, OZ Optics, Prysmian Group, Schlumberger, Skyview Construction and Smartpipe Technologies.
